With the introduction of the E10 for Petrol and Diesel there are issues that the motorist should be aware of :
It is essential that fuel is maintained in good condition to ensure efficiency.
Petrol will now have an increase in % Ethanol to 10%, whilst Diesel will have an increase in Fatty Acid Methyl Ester (FAME).
Ethanol being a hydroscopic chemical will absorb moisture from air present in the fuel tank.
FAME can be broken down by any water within the fuel system
The Ethanol and FAME are present in fuel as part of legislation to produce a cleaner exhaust emission for the reduction of environmental damage.
For PETROL having extra ethanol added helps to provide a better petrol ethanol balance but does mean that any water in the tank needs to be kept to only trace levels.
For DIESEL where the engines run hotter higher levels of condensation in fuel tanks can result, this water can create physical changes within the FAME additive causing engine failure.
It is important that fuel is cleaned of any water content to ensure that the quality and condition of the fuel is maintained, failure to do this can potentially cause serious mechanical damage.
